Summary
Occupational exposure to compounds found in explosives is associated with a clear, sustained increase in bladder cancer risk—supported by both research evidence and real-world data.
EOD Technicians can be exposed to a complex mixture of carcinogenic compounds that closely mirror high-risk industrial environments.
The attached analysis, based on a trade-group specific study of UK Ammunition Technicians, shows a clear and consistent increase in bladder cancer risk—approximately double overall—with evidence of much higher risk under heavier exposure conditions.
Crucially, independent industry data reporting a ~5-fold increase aligns with the highest-risk findings in this study, strengthening the real-world relevance of these results.
Despite this, gaps remain in exposure monitoring, protective measures, and long-term health surveillance for EOD & Search personnel

This study brings together evidence from multiple research papers to understand whether exposure to chemicals found in explosives is linked to bladder cancer.
Across several international studies, workers exposed to similar compounds found in munitions and their detonation products showed around double the rate of bladder cancer diagnoses compared to the general population. Deaths from bladder cancer were also higher, at nearly double the expected rate.
While some variation exists between studies, this is largely explained by differences in exposure levels. In fact, the highest-risk groups were those with the greatest and most prolonged exposure. In these circumstance, risks are raised almost 5-fold.
Importantly, this pattern reflects what has already been observed in practice. Early industry-specific research into British ammunition technicians identified an almost fivefold increase in bladder cancer risk, closely matching the highest-risk findings in this analysis. This group remains pivotal to ongoing research, which will unlock surveillance measures for the broader community.
Even when studies with additional confounding exposures are removed, the increased risk remains. This strengthens confidence that the relationship between occupational exposure and bladder cancer is real and consistent.

Ammunition technicians can be exposed to a complex mixture of chemicals through inhalation, skin contact, and ingestion—often over long periods and sometimes without adequate protection or monitoring.
This evidence suggests that such exposure is associated with a meaningful and preventable increase in cancer risk for the wider community.
